5 Ways to Improve HVAC Efficiency

HVAC maintenance Jacksonville, Florida

A focus on energy efficiency helps homeowners save money and regulate the temperature in your home. Often, the first sign that your HVAC system has lost energy efficiency is a marked increase in your energy bill. When you first notice your HVAC system isn’t working properly, schedule maintenance to determine the root cause of the problem. When repairs are done quickly, you can avoid more damage that could lead to costly repairs.

Signs of Low Energy Efficiency in HVAC Units

The first step to improving energy efficiency in your HVAC system is with awareness that your HVAC system isn’t performing as well as it should. Common signs your HVAC unit isn’t performing well include:

  •     Higher energy bills than normal
  •     Home temperature fluctuations
  •     Unit running constantly or more than normal
  •     Excess condensation on windows

If you notice these signs, it’s time to take action to improve the efficiency of your HVAC unit.

1 – Replace the Air Filter

The air filter is a critical component of your HVAC system. The primary job of the air filter is to protect your HVAC equipment. The air filter also serves to trap dust and debris from entering the duct system and ultimately the air you and your family breathe. However, air filters also block these harmful intrusions from damaging the HVAC unit.

Dirty or clogged air filters lower the energy efficiency of your HVAC unit and can lead to costly damage. For best results, clean or replace your air filter every month. Three months is the maximum amount of time between cleaning or replacing your air filter. If air can’t flow freely, your HVAC system must work harder.

2 – Install a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat can save homeowners an estimated 10% annually on heating and cooling costs. The thermostat regulates the temperature of your home, and based on the settings, then determines how frequently your HVAC unit runs.

Programmable thermostats allow you to adjust the temperature throughout the day based on your family’s habits. For example, the temperature can be programmed in winter at a lower temperature at night while sleeping. Smart Thermostats are an even better solution. A smart thermostat can be programmed from your smartphone to allow temperature changes even when you’re away from home.

Don’t allow your HVAC system to run unnecessarily and waste valuable energy. Instead, program your thermostat for better temperature control and to match your lifestyle.

3 – Duct Cleaning

Air duct cleaning works similarly to replacing your air filter. The goal is to provide a clear pathway for air from your HVAC unit to flow more efficiently. In fact, higher energy bills are a sign that air duct cleaning is needed. Also, if you notice an increase in allergies, dust in your home or debris in the air registers, you could likely benefit from air duct cleaning.

Air duct cleaning improves energy efficiency, but it also improves home air quality. In fact, people spend up to 90% of our time indoors, and indoor concentrations of air pollutants can be two to five times higher than outdoor concentration levels. Contact the Jacksonville, Florida, HVAC experts at J&W Heating and Air to schedule duct cleaning and improve your home’s energy efficiency.

4 – Repair Damaged or Worn Parts

If your HVAC system is in need of repair, it may be working harder than usual. This may be one of the reasons you’ve seen a jump in your energy bill. Look for signs that your system needs repairs like bad odors, strange sounds and poor temperature regulation. Oftentimes, if issues are addressed quickly it costs less money for the repairs. For example, if a worn belt breaks and flies off, it can hit other components and cause unnecessary damage.

If you schedule regular HVAC maintenance, the technician is able to inspect the unit for any needed repairs. They will evaluate if parts are working as they should. Maintaining your HVAC unit not only increases energy efficiency, but also extends the life of your unit. Don’t wait until your unit breaks; stay on top of needed repairs.

5 – Purchase a New HVAC System

New HVAC systems are more energy efficient than older units. Most HVAC units last between 10 and 20 years depending on the quality and care of the unit. It can be cost effective to install a new HVAC system by saving money on repairs and energy costs. Also, a new HVAC system adds value to your home, especially if you’re planning to sell your home soon.

In order to maximize energy efficiency with the purchase of your new HVAC unit, work with a trusted heating and air conditioning company. The experts will be able to recommend the best unit for your home and install the system properly.

Create Energy Efficiency in Your Home

If you’re experiencing higher energy bills or simply want to reduce energy consumption, perform an energy audit in your home. An energy audit serves to identify areas for increased energy efficiency. This may include sealing air leaks, improved insulation, duct cleaning or repairing or replacing your HVAC system.

Just had an entirely new, full HVAC install done at our old house in Riverside, which was a fairly big job. Brian and... Will did the installation, and were awesome. There was going to be issues leveling the air handler in the attic, so they moved it to a new spot and hung it instead, getting new parts/changing the plan on the fly. We're much happier with this new setup and location of the air handler. I really appreciated this, their professionalism/thoroughness, and flexibility. Brian and Will worked super-hard, and double-checked everything once the job was done. Would use this company again.read more

A snake crawled into my outdoor condenser and stopped my 16 year old Trane last week on Thursday. The power surge took... out my blower unit circuit board and the motor. I called J&W and Rob was over within two hours of my call. I was spec'd a new York 17 seer system and it was up and running on Monday. Technicians Jason and Brian arrived promptly and every facet of the installation was thorough. When completed, I would not of even known they were there except they left my garage cleaner! Thanks J&W!read more
