Here’s What to do if Your Second Floor Feels too Hot

Homebuilders across the entire country are pretty consistent regarding the approaches that they take to households. So many homes are being built across the state of Florida abroad with multiple floors, incredible yards, and lots of living space. Each of the homes looks similar to one another in neighborhoods, with kitchens, dining rooms, and living rooms on the first floor, while the second houses the bedrooms. One common struggle that many run into, though, is trying to keep that second-floor cool, especially in the summer.

Ever hear the old saying that heat rises? That is spot-on accurate, as heat does rise. In the summer months, in Florida especially, the second floor of homes can get unbearable. The heat and the humidity will rise to that second floor, where you and your family have to sleep every night. What can be done to cool off that area when it feels too hot? We at J&W Heating and Air are here to save the day with our air conditioning Nocatee FL professionals, as well as some added tips on top of it.

Install Air Conditioning

If you do not have a central air conditioning system running to the second floor, think about adding one. Window units may seem like they will do the job, but they are not likely to have the power to be able to adequately control the temperature on that second level, especially when talking about Florida’s summer heat and humidity.

Our team of air conditioning Nocatee FL can help get your home sized for a central air conditioning system in short order. The installation process is easier than you think and you can even have multiple zones installed. This can allow you to set the temperature upstairs lower than downstairs since more cooling is going to be needed to help reduce that second level’s heat.

Turn Down Blinds

Blinds are something that can help a lot as well regarding cooling down the second floor. Close the blinds during the day, even the drapes if you have them. When you do this, you are going to be blocking out the sun as it tries to beat inside of the second floor. This is a useful technique and will help a lot in reducing the heat the floor picks up.

Attic Insulation
When was the last time you checked your attic and the insulation that it has? When you have an attic that is poorly insulated, what you are going to find is that the heat of the attic will come down on you. Ever go up to your attic on a hot day? The attic is usually far warmer than your second floor. When poor insulation exists, that heat is going just to trickle down to the living area.

Closing First Floor Registers

You may have a central air conditioning system that was only installed with one zone. This means you have one thermostat controlling the temperature of upstairs and downstairs. What you can do in this scenario is to close some of the registers on the first floor partially. Doing this will help to increase the airflow to the second floor, making it cooler.

Combating heat on the second floor of your home can be a real challenge. Our air conditioning Nocatee FL professionals at J&W Heating and Air are faced with this issue all of the time. We can help you with air conditioning systems, home energy audits, and anything else so you can gain more insight, more control, over that second-floor heat problem.

Just had an entirely new, full HVAC install done at our old house in Riverside, which was a fairly big job. Brian and... Will did the installation, and were awesome. There was going to be issues leveling the air handler in the attic, so they moved it to a new spot and hung it instead, getting new parts/changing the plan on the fly. We're much happier with this new setup and location of the air handler. I really appreciated this, their professionalism/thoroughness, and flexibility. Brian and Will worked super-hard, and double-checked everything once the job was done. Would use this company again.read more

Both men went above just installing my new unit, they were personable and knowledgeable in what they were doing. I was surprised when I found out these two hadn't been working that long together. A snake crawled into my outdoor condenser and stopped my 16 year old Trane last week on Thursday. The power surge took... out my blower unit circuit board and the motor. I called J&W and Rob was over within two hours of my call. I was spec'd a new York 17 seer system and it was up and running on Monday. Technicians Jason and Brian arrived promptly and every facet of the installation was thorough. When completed, I would not of even known they were there except they left my garage cleaner! Thanks J&W!read more
