Why Should a SEER Rating Even Matter to You?

One of the reasons that you’re likely in the market for a new central air conditioning system is to try and reduce your energy bill monthly. You’re seeking energy efficiency gains by either replacing the system that you have or going with a new system in the spirit of getting rid of your old window AC units once and for all. One of the most common things you’ll see as you shop for central air conditioning systems is the SEER ratings. What are these ratings and why should you care about them? Our team of HVAC maintenance Jacksonville professionals can help explain the value that can be derived from that SEER number.

The SEER rating is essentially a statement as to just how “green” and environmentally friendly the central air conditioning system that you’re buying is. The SEER rating provides you with an opportunity to, very quickly, compare one central air conditioning system to the next. It is pivotal to introduce yourself to that SEER score and get an understanding of it to make you’re buying the best unit possible.

Explaining SEER

To understand the value of the SEER rating, you need to know what it is. SEER stands for season energy efficiency ratio. It’s a measure of how much cooling power the central air conditioning system has when compared to the energy that it has to use to create it.

The measurement of the SEER is a rating that’s based on energy usage and cooling effectiveness over an entire season of time. When thinking about a season, summer is the first one that usually comes to mind.

The Range

The range for units when it comes to the SEER is going to vary anywhere from 13 all the way up to 23. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficiency the system is going to be. Think about the SEER as a score for your air conditioning system, similar to how your car is rated at MPG for how much gas it uses per mile driven.

Money in Your Pocket

The SEER rating should matter to you because it is something that can equate to more money in your pocket each month. As you’re shopping for a system with your HVAC maintenance Jacksonville professional, talk about the SEER. The units that have the higher SEER ratings are going to carry with them bigger price tags, but they’ll also give you higher monthly savings from an energy perspective. It’s all about finding that perfect balance between a SEER rating you’re comfortable with and the price of a particular unit that you perceive provides you with value.

The SEER rating is a number that you always want to give a fair amount of attention to as you’re shopping for a central air conditioning system. This number can equate to money savings on a monthly basis due to reduced energy bills. The more that you’re on top of what the SEER rating is, the more educated of a buying decision you will be able to come to. Just had an entirely new, full HVAC install done at our old house in Riverside, which was a fairly big job. Brian and... Will did the installation, and were awesome. There was going to be issues leveling the air handler in the attic, so they moved it to a new spot and hung it instead, getting new parts/changing the plan on the fly. We're much happier with this new setup and location of the air handler. I really appreciated this, their professionalism/thoroughness, and flexibility. Brian and Will worked super-hard, and double-checked everything once the job was done. Would use this company again.read more

Both men went above just installing my new unit, they were personable and knowledgeable in what they were doing. I was surprised when I found out these two hadn't been working that long together. A snake crawled into my outdoor condenser and stopped my 16 year old Trane last week on Thursday. The power surge took... out my blower unit circuit board and the motor. I called J&W and Rob was over within two hours of my call. I was spec'd a new York 17 seer system and it was up and running on Monday. Technicians Jason and Brian arrived promptly and every facet of the installation was thorough. When completed, I would not of even known they were there except they left my garage cleaner! Thanks J&W!read more
